Yow-zah!

I recently discovered these awesome pots by Peter Karner and I thought I would share.  He lives in the mountains of Southwest Colorado working as a full-time potter. Peter's pots are are thrown, thrown and altered, or hand-built.  To create his patterns he uses wax resist, latex, dipping, and brushwork on bisqued pots.  The pots are then high-fired in a heavy reduction atmosphere with the intent of trapping carbon in the base glaze.  He gets my fantastic ceramics vote for this week!

Fantastic Ceramics

I really don't know how I happen upon these great artists, but somehow I find them and I'm amazed at how much great functional work there is in the world.

Lauren Smith makes fantastic ceramics. She just got her MFA from University of North Texas. Her work is simple, yet contemporary. Subtle, yet engaging. I am quite envious that she has a cohesive body of work. That is something I am trying to work towards, but I haven't achieved yet.

In other news, I just made a 21" masonite bat with a jig saw. I love being crafty! I made some wide bowls this weekend and I have been dying to trim them. Images to come!

Fantastic Ceramics

This week's fantastic ceramics award goes to Doug Peltzman. I'm a little wary about posting images of other artist's works in my blog without their approval (I don't have the 411 on copyright laws), but I've posted my favorite image of his work. ::crosses fingers:: Hopefully, my good intentions will not go unnoticed.

Things I really enjoy about this work:

-his intense attention to surface design

-his bravery of quilting many different designs on one piece

-his unique spin on the functional forms (super cool handles)

-how modern and clean the work looks without being slip-cast
